NewsmakersStatistician Chernoff wins honorary degree
from University of Rome
Herman Chernoff, professor of statistics, will be awarded an honorary
degree by the University of Rome (Universita degli Studi di Roma) in a ceremony
on April 22. The honorary degree, or laurea "honoris causa" in
the Statistical, Demographic, and Social Sciences, will be awarded to Chernoff
for his "incomparable accomplishments in scholarship."
Chemist Friend presents American Chemical Society award
Cynthia M. Friend, professor in the Department of Chemistry, presented
the Theodore William Richards Medal of the Northeastern Section of the American
Chemical Society in a ceremony at Harvard last month. The medal, which is
awarded every two years "for conspicuous achievement in chemistry,"
is named after the 1914 Nobel laureate in chemistry and professor of physical
chemistry at Harvard. Friend, who is chair of the Richards Medal Award Committee,
presented the award to Professor JoAnne Stubbe of M.I.T. in recognition
of her work on enzymes.
Tomlinson receives honorary degree for work on tropical plants
P. Barry Tomlinson, Edward C. Jeffrey Professor of Biology at the
Harvard Forest, was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science by
the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Tomlinson, who held appointments
at the University of Malaya and the University of Ghana before coming to
Harvard in 1971, was cited for his "pioneering work on the growth and
structure of tropical plant species, [which] has drawn attention to the
enormous diversity . . . of tropical rain forests." The degree was
awarded at the University of Guelph's winter convocation ceremonies in February.
